National Ice Cream Month- You Are Invited!
On July 25, 2012 by LoriThank You Mr.President
National Ice Cream Month sounds like a made-up holiday, and it was — by President Reagan. One can only imagine the political pressure he faced from underage voters in 1984 when he proclaimed July the time to celebrate vanilla and rocky road.
The International Dairy Food Association (IDFA) prepared a variety of activities to promote ice cream, starting with the Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party. Just in case you were not there, which you probably were not unless you are a member of the U.S. Congress; the 30th Annual Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party took place on June 21. By all accounts, I read that is was the “coolest” and most bipartisan summertime gala on the Hill. How fun is this invite from last year…
According to the event’s main sponsor and host, the International Dairy Foods Association, the annual Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party served up about 2,000 gallons of ice cream and frozen yogurt, 6,000 root beer floats and 44 cases of sundae toppings to members of Congress, their families and staffs, and lucky special guests.
The next big event is a Twitter party scheduled for today- July 25, 2:00–3:00 p.m. EST. Participants can attend the party using the hashtag #icecreammonth.
IDFA partnered with The Motherhood, a network of mom bloggers, to help prepare, promote and moderate the party. The Motherhood network will invite tens of thousands of followers to join the party and share their love of ice cream. So consider this your invite and click here to RSVP.
“IDFA’s goal is to get as many people as possible talking about the good times they’ve had while eating ice cream and to keep the conversation going long after National Ice Cream Month has passed,” said Marti Pupillo, IDFA director of communications. “During the party, we’ll also feature a trivia contest and award prizes to five lucky winners. Let’s work together to make an online splash for ice cream this month.”
President Reagan also designated the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. But true Americans don’t just celebrate ice cream one day…we keep it going all year long! So for all you who missed Sundays ice cream sundae blowouts…be sure to visit a family favorite “Ruby’s Diner” this Friday, July 27th.
Ruby’s is celebrating their “30th Anniversary” and Ruby’s “90th” birthday, so grab the family and head down for their special shakes for only $.90 cents! Choose from the double vanilla, Hershey’s chocolate or strawberry. A perfect end to a hot summer week and a great way to treat the young and old.
