Friends #23 Leap Year Lists
On February 29, 2012 by LoriBefore I make the Next Leap in Life…
A lil history lesson… 2012 is a leap year, which means that it has 366 days instead of the usual 365 days that an ordinary year has. An extra day is added in a leap year—February 29 —which is called an intercalary day or a leap day.
The Egyptians were the first to come up with the idea of adding a leap day once every four years to keep the calendar in sync with the solar year. Later, the Romans adopted this solution for their calendar, and they became the first to designate February 29 as the leap day.
Leap Year is traditionally when women can propose to men. According to Irish tradition, a man who receives a marriage proposal on a leap day must accept it. It’s true- just watch the movie! Hehehe….
Now if you were born on Leap Day in a Leap year, you can gain access into The Honor Society of Leap Year Babies. We have a childhood friend who turns 10 this year! Find out about some famous leapers!
Family Circus launched its first comic strip on Leap Year Day 02-29-1960.
Comics have brought awareness to the special day and now children have created jump rope rhymes…
